In May 1946, Mary and Peter Caris, Greek immigrants, came to Old Orchard Beach, Maine from Manchester, New Hampshire in pursuit of a small seasonal business in which they along with their children John and Everedeke Caris could engage and keep their family together. After looking at many properties with their son John they established the Sunny Side Restaurant in Downtown Old Orchard Beach during the big band era where Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington use to frequent the restaurant late nights after their gigs at the Palace on the Old Orchard Beach Pier and old lodging houses situated around the corner on top of the hill. After the passing of Peter Caris in January 1970 family and friends were astounded that this gentle Greek woman -- Mary Caris -- was so unequivocally determined to keep her family together and believed in her heart she could do so until here passing in 1984. During the years, Dr. John Caris wife Christina and daughters Mary Beth Herzog and Nancy Markos and their families regularly vacationed in Old Orchard Beach since the 1950's.
Since then the Business has grown through Mary and Peter's daughter Everedeke and her children Dennis, Jonathan and Monica and grandson Socrates. And on this day, a greek family tradition of hospitality on the shores of Old Orchard Beach is celebrating it's 60th year. Today, the tradition of service continues, through daughter Everedeke and grandson Dennis, proud heirs of The Caris Landings by the Sea.
