Welcome

The pineapple is the traditional symbol of hospitality. When colonial sea captains returned from their tropical voyages, they hung pineapples on their front doors as a sign of welcome and hospitality.
This tradition has continued and is still very prevalent in the coastal cities and towns from New England to Florida. Watch for pineapples! They may be carved into doorways or on fence posts. Many times they are used on signs to give a feeling of friendship and welcome.
As you enter the The Caris Landings by the Sea, you will see a gilded pineapple placed on the front entrance – true to both the seafaring history of Maine and our sense of hospitality to you, our guests.
